Spring Visit 3rd - 12th April 2009

In her capacity as a lecturer of Japanese culture, Akemi will take a small group of British people to Japan. They will visit castles, gardens, Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples; travel on the shinkansen (bullet train) and be honoured guests at specially arranged cultural events: tea ceremonies, demonstrations of martial arts, pottery and paper making, traditional music, dance, drama and so on. The spring visit will include hana mi, a traditional cherry blossom viewing picnic.

3rd AprilLeaving Heathrow Airport, to fly to Japan
4th AprilArriving Tokyo Narita International airport
If cherry blossom is full, we enjoy yozakura (night viewing of blossom).
Accommodation in a hotel.
5th AprilMoving from Tokyo to Aomori by Bullet Train and meeting host families.
In the afternoon, Japanese cultural demonstrations by pupils of Aomori Minami High School
6th AprilSightseeing in Aomori, including visits to Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
7th AprilCultural Day in Aomori, including participating in tea ceremony, kimono wearing, calligraphy and traditional music.
8th April'Hana Mi' Cherry Blossom Viewing - hunting for the best cherry blossom and travelling there to enjoy a traditional cherry blossom viewing picnic.
9th AprilDay visit to ancient and historic Hirosaki city.
10th AprilAnother Cultural Day in Aomori, including visiting a sword smith and demonstrations from martial arts masters.
11th AprilFarewell to host families, then moving to Tokyo by Bullet Train.
12th AprilLeaving from Narita airport then returning to Heathrow airport.

Visiting the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Memorial
Meeting host families in Kumamoto.
14th AprilVisiting primary and secondary schools in Kumamoto for Japanese cultural demonstrations and cross-cultural experiences, including eating lunch together.
15th AprilVisiting Kumamoto Castle and a 16th century gardens of Lord Hosokawa
16th AprilCultural Day:-
  • Meeting samurai sword master
  • Watching martial arts
  • Participating in the Tea Ceremony
  • Participating in Ikebana flower arrangement
  • Participating in calligraphy
17th AprilMoving from Kumamoto to Kyoto by Bullet Train.
Half-day sightseeing in Kyoto
Moving to Gifu by Bullet Train and meeting host family.
18th AprilEnjoying Japanese arts and customs with local people.
Free time with host family, including specially requested activities and sightseeing.
19th AprilSightseeing and cultural activities, followed by presentation on Britain and British lifestyle to Japanese people and farewell party
20th April In the morning, visiting Japanese school
School students will show tea ceremony, martial arts and other aspects of Japanese culture.
In the afternoon, move to Tokyo by Bullet Train.
21st AprilLeaving from Narita airport then returning to Heathrow airport.
Manga & Anime Art (Japan Festival) Visit
including World Cosplay Summit & Nebuta Festival

In her capacity as a lecturer of Japanese culture, Akemi will take a small group of British people to Japan, to appreciate the cultural context of manga, anime and cosplay.

27th JulyLeaving from Heathrow Airport at 19:15 on Japan Airlines flight 402
28th JulyArriving at Narita Airport at 15:00 (local time), changing JR Pass at the airport.
After checking in to the hotel, everyone will go to an Izakaya (Japanese style pub) in Narita city.
29th JulyTokyo sightseeing, including Ghibli Museum (I have already bought the tickets) and Akihabara.
30th July
to 1st Aug
Go to Gundam, then using the Shinkansen (bullet train) we go from Tokyo to Kyoto on the afternoon of 30th July.
We stay in Kyoto, the beautiful ancient capital of Japan, for three nights and enjoy sightseing in Kyoto and Nara.
2nd AugWe move to Nagoya to see the World Cosplay Summit
At night we go to the Izakaya with local Japanese people.
3rd AugWe move to Aomori by bullet train to attend Nefuta festival in Hirosaki
4th AugWe move to Sendai to attend Nebuta festival.
5th - 7th AugStaying with Japanese family in Sendai, including Tanabata festival.
8th AugMoving from Sendai to spend the last night in Japan in a hotel near Narita airport
9th AugLeaving from Narita airport at 10:00 on Japan Airlines flight 403 to Heathrow airport, arriving at 14:35 (British time)

The party stayed with Japanese families in Kagoshima and Kumamoto; visited castles, Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples; enjoyed mo miji gari (leaf-viewing) and an onsen (hot-spring spa) in the mountains; and were honoured guests at specially arranged cultural events.
30th Jul- 8th AugResidential Study Retreat & Cultural Exchange Visit to England, Summer 2002
In Summer 2002 Akemi Solloway brought a small group of Japanese people to Sussex, England. From 30th July to 4th August the party studied English language and culture at a residential study retreat at Ardingly College, where they also enjoyed the sport and recreational facilities, and took part in educational and cultural events at local schools and societies. From 4th to 8th August they stayed with British host families in Mid-Sussex, visited London and many local places of interest, and were honoured guests at specially arranged educational, cultural and social events.
